How is Porcelain Tile Made?

November 5, 2020

It is no surprise that porcelain is one of the most beloved tile materials of all time. Its durability, functionality, and multi-use nature make a strong case for being among the best of the best. Boasting luxurious appeal and shining with class, porcelain tile was originally made in China in the 15th century before finding its way to Europe. At its start, porcelain was mainly used for walls. But, we’ve come a long way since then. Interior designers have made it clear that there is so much more to this material than just wall appeal.

There are more than a handful of top producers working to create and distribute porcelain tile products, from Turkey and Spain to Australia and Brazil. Although porcelain calls for a higher price tag, it comes with a good reason. Few materials can withstand the elements as efficiently. Porcelain can be used inside or outside, as it is impervious to moisture. This makes it a top choice for luxury kitchens, bathrooms, and even showers or outdoor spaces.

Porcelain is made a bit differently than other tile products. The process is what makes it more durable and resistant to traffic, water, and damage.

Thanks to modern technology, there is a large array of innovative options for interior designers to choose from and use. Whether it’s a natural material that looks like stone or marble, or a more modern look with solid colors- we offer an army of porcelain tiles that we guarantee will fulfill your goals.

Let’s go a little bit deeper on the subject of porcelain, where it comes from, and how it’s made!

A history worth noting

Like we mentioned earlier, the first known porcelain tiles on record came from China. It must be understood that without ceramic, there would be no porcelain. So, to properly know the history of porcelain, one must understand the history of ceramics. Made from raw materials like rocks, sand, and clay, ceramic dates all the way back to 4700 B.C. where it was used by the Romans. Although the tiles from this period were nowhere near the quality of what we are able to create today, their preservation throughout history boasts undeniable durability. That durability is the top reason why it is still relevant in today’s world.

Process is everything

Originally, it is easy to assume that laborers simply mixed raw materials together with water and created tiles or brick-like shapes to complete their building plans. Of course, with time comes an evolution of sorts. Our way of producing porcelain tile today is lightyears beyond where the process started. Step by step, here’s how it’s made:

  1. Blend raw materials with tiny beads to grind the mixture into a desirable consistency.
  2. The mix is then poured into an industrial machine for drying, which helps drain excess liquid.
  3. The material is pressed to achieve maximum strength.
  4. After it is pressed, it is formed into whatever size sheets the specific tile design calls for.
  5. The sheets are placed on racks for more dry time.
  6. Designs, patterns, and colors are added to the sheets to get them ready for distribution.
  7. Once the tile has the function and look that meets quality standards, it is baked to perfection!

Advancement means options

More technology equals more opportunity. And, more opportunity means more options. When porcelain made its way into the world, the designs were simple as makers got used to the consistency of the product. Over the centuries, things have progressed and now, there are porcelain tiles made to look like wood, marble, stone, and mosaics. Here are just a few of those notable variations:

The options of quality porcelain tile products are endless. If you’ve got questions, we’ve got answers. Want to continue on this tile journey with the team at Trinity Tile? Join us on Instagram and Facebook!
